ACUPRESSURE – Acupressure is the art of using various pressure points on the body to manipulate the Qi energy within the body. The process, concept, and history is nearly identical to Acupuncture except that the energy is manipulated via pressure rather than the insertion of needles. SEE ALSO Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine

ACUPUNCTURE – Acupuncture is the art of inserting very small needles into various parts of the body to manipulate the "vital energy" or "Qi" within the body. For the Chinese, "Qi" is no more mysterious than electricity. Anything that helps "move" this vital energy when it is stagnant will help bring the body back into balance or homeostatis, thus allowing it to heal. It is important to understand that Acupuncture (and Traditional Chinese Medicine in general) is not "folk medicine". It is a highly developed, systematic, recorded, researched, and peer reviewed form of medicine with several disciplines that continues to evolve. It has a massive amount of real-world data to justify the application of techniques based on several thousand years of human trials. Acupuncture is far more than just a pain-blocker, it is one of the fundamental methods of healthcare in all of Asia, and one of the most profound healing modalities in the world. Acupuncture needles are very thin and solid. and are not designed to cut the skin, but to displace the skin and stimulate areas beneath the skin. In comparison to Acupuncture needles, Western needles are huge because the diameter needs to be large enough to transfer the thick fluids of the body.Acupuncture needles are usually inserted by placing them in a "tube-like" holder to keep them from bending upon insertion, then the doctor will "tap" the top of the holder to insert the thin needle to the desired depth. The holder is then removed, leaving the actual needle in place. The needles are left in place for a presribed period of time (up to 30 minutes) before removal. Depending on the treatment plan, from one to several dozen needles could be inserted in various points.Acupuncture can be tranced back as far as the Stone Age in China, when stone knives and pointed rocks were used to relieve pain and diseases. In the United States, Franlin Bache, M.D. a great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, wrote an article, "Case illustrative of Remial Effects of Acupuncture" showing the benefits of the art, and in 1916, Sir William Osler, M.D. wrote an article recommending acupuncture for treatment for lumbago in the "Principles and Practice of Medicine". Despite an occasional article, Acupuncture remained rare until 1971 when James Reston, a reporter for the New York Times accompanied President Nixon on a trip to China where they witnessed an appendoctomy using Acupuncture Anesthesia. AETHER – see ETHEREAL

AKASHA – a ‘space’ (for lack of a better term) that is most commonly described as “the Fifth Element” or “Spiritual Ether (Aether)”. Akasha, as the Fifth Element, is omnipresent and embraces all four of the physical elements (earth, fire, water, air.) It is also defined as the 'other' of the 'two worlds' through which souls can walk through. It is related to outer space, inner space, life force. Esoteric Science teaches that the entire Cosmos is pervaded by Akasha and in the Theosophical Glossary, Akasha is described as "the subtle, super-sensuous spiritual essence which pervades all space." In Hinduism, Akasha means the basis and essence of all things; the source of everything that exists. In Hindi the meaning of Akasha is sky. NOTE: There is a clear distinction between 1) Akasha; 2) the Astral Light; and 3) Ether. Akasha in its higher portions is pure spirit; the astral light is the seventh or highest division of our physical cosmic plane and may even in a sense be called the most subtle part of the terrestrial atmosphere; whereas ether is a material agent interpenetrating molecular matter. In one sense these three are the highest, the very low, and the lowest parts of spirit or Akasha itself.

AKASHIC RECORDS - the ‘recordings’ left in the Akasha by every event. The Akashic Records are the past, present, and future knowledge of all things. From the time a soul begins to experience life as an independent entity, this field of energy records every thought, word, intent, emotion, and deed generated by that soul. This field of energy is known as the Akashic Record and it contains every piece of information from the time the soul leaves its point of origin until the end of time. There is one great difference between the Astral Light and the Akashic Records which must be remembered. The latter is eternal, the former is periodic. SEE ALSO Astral Light

ASTRAL LIGHT - This is the next cosmic plane above the physical that is the carrier of life-forces and the storehouse of cosmic energies on their way to or from physical manifestation. It preserves an indelible record of all events on the astral and physical planes, there being continual interaction between the two planes. No natural phenomenon, whether mental, psychic, or physical, can be explained without it; without it, the physical world would crumble to impalpable dust. There is one great difference between the Astral Light and the Akashic Records which must be remembered. The latter is eternal, the former is periodic. SEE ALSO Akashic Records

ASTRAL PROJECTION – see ASTRAL TRAVEL

ASTRAL TRAVEL – (also referred to as ‘astral projection’’ or ‘soul journeying’) The soul is able to leave the physical body behind and travel to distant locations. It typically involves a sensation of floating outside of one's body and, in some cases, perceiving one's physical body from a place outside one's body. Those who practice astral projection claim that their senses are enhanced, allowing them to see and feel with more clarity and without physical constraint. Astral Travel is said to be clearer than a dream or daydream and is most frequently achieved through visualization while in a relaxed, meditative state. For the most part, Astral Travel is desired for a spiritual reason, such as reaching a higher level of consciousness or enlightenment. Also see: Out-of-body experience

AURA – The subtle biomagnetic sheath that surrounds the physical body, providing a protective zone that extends for about eighteen inches to three feet from the body and contains information about a person’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual state of being. The ‘intuitive-eye’ can see dis-ease in the aura. Also known as Etheric Body.

BASE CHAKRA – See ROOT CHAKRA

BETWEEN-LIVES STATE – In esoteric thought, the state into which the soul moves out of a physical incarnation (i.e. has died on earth). The soul exists in this state in a subtle energy body, which carries the imprint of what happened to it in former lives. Here the soul formulates its plan for the next life. The between-lives state can also be accessed by the soul during a physical incarnation. While in this state it is possible to heal the past and to access the purpose and plan for the present life.An intriguing book on what happens between lives based on the author's cases from his private practice, in which he hypnotically regressed his clients to a point between lives--after death, but before birth.: Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives

BIOMAGNETIC FIELD/SHEATH – The energy field that surrounds all living things. Also known as the Aura or Etheric Body.

BLACK MIRROR – a dark (usually black) Scrying Mirror

BROW CHAKRA – located between the eyebrows; also known as the Third-Eye or 6th Chakra. The Brow/Third-Eye Chakra is associated with the syllable Ohm which represents the beginning and end of all things. It is from this center that we harmonize the forces within ourselves and achieve a balance between Yin and Yang. The sixth chakra controls intuition, clairvoyance, divination, etc. It is the seat of creativity, and when active and open, the seat of Divine Intelligence. It controls intuitive and rational thought, memory, and all higher mental activities. A fully opened and activated sixth chakra allows for such things as clairvoyance, telepathic communication, and healing through mental projection. Through the power of their own mind, those with activated sixth chakras can create new realities for themselves on the physical plane and go beyond the earthly goals and attachments which divert most people from fulfilling their Dharma. MIND AND SOUL ASSOCIATIONS: Psychism, Intuition, Spiritual awareness, Higher Service/The Great Work, Communication with the Divine. PHYSICAL ASSOCIATIONS AND BODY SYMPTOMS: Tension headaches, migraine, visual problems, sinusitis. CRYSTAL/STONE ASSOCIATIONS: Amethyst, Kyanite,
Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite, Sugalite, Moss Agate, Celestite, Unakite

CENTERING –the process of moving one’s consciousness to one’s spiritual or psychic center, leading to a feeling of great peace, calmness, strength, clarity, focus, stability and balance. A good centering technique is to ground, relax, and focus on your breathing. Breathe in deeply and welcome in the healthy spiritual energies. Exhale all mundane and negative thoughts and energies. Breathe in deeply, and feel the spiritual energies in your breathe spreading throughout your entire body. Hold that cleansing breathe for a few seconds. Slowly exhale and feel all of the distracting thoughts leaving your mind. Breathe in deeply a third time, again filling your body, mind, and spirit the peace, balance, and clarity. Hold that breath a few seconds. Slowly exhale and let go of any final distracting thoughts or energies.

CHAKRA – A spinning vortex of subtle energy. The Chakras are a system of subtle energy channels and centers which are the basis for the meridians and energy points used in acupuncture, yoga practice, and energy work. There are 7 Major Chakras, located in a straight line on the body running parallel to the spine. These centers connect the energy of the physical body with that of the subtle body. There are hundreds of additional Chakras located throughout the body, frequently known as the Minor Chakras. The 7 major Chakras are: 1st - Root Chakra , 2nd - Sacral Chakra , 3rd - Solar Plexus Chakra , 4th - Heart Chakra , 5th - Throat Chakra , 6th - Brow Chakra , 7th - Crown Chakra. If you are interested in working with your Chakras, please look at our Chakra Stone kits. These kits are excellent for both beginners AND advanced practitioners and include an excellent and comprehensive guidebook to get you started (or help fine tune) your Chakra work.

CHINESE MEDICINE - Traditional Chinese Medicine is a form of Eastern Medicine. It includes a range of traditional medical practices originating in China and is considered a Complementary or Alternative Medical system in most of the Western world. Traditional Chinese Medicine practices include theories, diagnosis and treatments such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, acupressure, Qigong, and massage. Chinese herbal medicine, along with the other components of Chinese medicine, is primarily based on the concepts of Yin and Yang energy. It aims to understand and treat the many ways in which the fundamental balance and harmony between the two energies may be undermined, as well as the ways in which a person's Qi or vitality may be depleted or blocked. Clinical strategies are based upon diagnosis of patterns of signs and symptoms that reflect an imbalance. The tradition of Chinese Medicine as a whole places great emphasis on lifestyle management in order to prevent disease before it occurs. Chinese medicine recognizes that health is more than just the absence of disease and it has a unique capacity to maintain and enhance our capacity for well being and happiness. By awakening the crown chakra a person achieves wholeness through the process of psycho-spiritual integration. We transcend fear and experience unconditional joy. In Tantra, the awakening of the crown chakra corresponds to the union of the feminine principle with the masculine principle. This union, once formed, lasts forever. ENERGY - in the metaphysical sense (and the most simplistic of definitions) “energy” is the single electromagnetic field that encompasses and permeates everything. From a certain perspective, everything can be said to consist of energy vibrating in various wavelengths. Thus energy maifests as solid matter, liquids, gases, plasma, and still-more-subtle energy fields. Our physical bodies, our spirits, our Chakras, the universe, as well as furniture, plants, animals, books, computers, food, etc. Energy is a single force that unites everything -- be it physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, ethereal, or astral. First used popularly in Greece by Aristotle.

Because gazing in general has evolved over many centuries in many cultures, the term “gazing” encompasses many different forms, may include a variety of objects (such as mirrors, spheres or cyrstal balls, etc.) and has numerous schools of thought as to the sources of the visions seen while in the gazing trance. Gazing is done for a variety of purposes, including to predict distant or future events, receive enlightenment on past events, and to help make choices about current situations and challenges. PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION if you are PAYING someone (especially a stranger) to perform a Divination method for you. We cannot emphasize this enough! For example: a personal trainer may train your physical body (and may or may not include a bit of mental conditioning) in their training regiment; a Holisic personal trainer would incorporate all aspects of the body, mind, AND spirit into their training techniques. NADI - (Sanskrit: channel or vein; Tamil: psychic nerve) - the channels through which, in traditional Indian medicine and spiritual science, the energies of the subtle body are said to flow. NAMASTE - (pronounced “nah-mah-STAY” or “nah-mah-TAY” depending on your tradition) - is a highly reverent greeting, salutation, parting phrase, or gesture that expresses deep respect and is used at the beginning and/or ending of written or verbal communication. Namaste is a spiritual acknowledgement of your appreciation of the other person to their Higher Self, and promotes love, healing, forgiveness, and an acknowledgement that we are all one. The literal English translation, “I bow to you” or “I salute and honor you” strips away much of the original Sanskrit meaning. There are many derivative meanings such as: “The spirit in me honors the spirit in you” “Your spirit and my spirit are One” “That which is of the Divine in me greets that which is of the Divine in you” “I salute the God within you” “I honor the place in you in which the entire Universe dwells, I honor the place in you which is of Love, of Integrity, of Wisdom and of Peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are One”. When spoken to another person, it is commonly accompanied by a slight bow made with hands pressed together, palms touching and fingers pointed upwards, in front of the chest. The Namaste gesture can also be performed without the spoken word and carry the same meaning. In some yoga traditions, Namaste is said to mean " I am your humble servant" which you say to your instructor.

NATURAL – Stones and Crystals (and the objects created from them) that come from the Earth -- not to be confused with synthetic 'stones' that are man-made. From the earliest prehistoric times people have found beauty, power, and mystery in natural stones and crystals. Through learning about (and drawing upon the energies of) natural stones, we can change ourselves, our lives, and our reality. We can manifest love, harmony, and balance; divine the answers we seek, heal old wounds, and turn our dreams into reality. Only Natural (never synthetic) stones and crystals are used in Energy work such as Reiki, Chakra, and Healing.

NUMEROLOGY - Numerology is a system or belief in the relationship between numbers and physical objects, living things, and cosmic vibrations (energy.) Each letter of the alpahabet has a number (numeric value) and each number represents a related cosmic vibration. The sum of a set of numbers provide insights into an interrelation of vibrations. For example: the sum of the numbers derived from say, the letters in your name, can reveal a great deal about character, purpose in life, what motivates, where talents may lie, and certain aptitudes and tendencies. Experts in numerology use the numbers to determine the best time for major moves and activities in life. Numerology is also used by some to decide when to invest, when to marry, when to travel, when to change jobs, or relocate. The scope of numerology, and it's multitude of systems, traditions, and beliefs, is beyond the context of this glossary, but here are some websites that will help get you started on your own research into the history and practice of numerology: Wikipedia on Numerology , Astrology-Numerology.com , Skepdic on Numerology , Free Numerology Study Guide And finally, Zen Cyrstals reminds you to PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION if you are PAYING someone (especially a stranger) to perform a Numerology reading for you. We cannot emphasize this enough! Though there really are many legitimate, truly gifted Numerologists in the world, there are millions more that are simply out to make a quick buck off of your pain, discomfort, insecurity, or curiosity! PLEASE use caution before turning over your hard-earned money to someone for any type of reading or divination method.

A good book to learn to do past life regression (PLR) for yourself is:Practical Guide to Past-Life Memories: Twelve Proven Methods And here are a couple of websites with information on self PLR techniques: Self Conducted Past Life Regression Exercise Three Basic PLR guidelines And finally, Zen Cyrstals reminds you to PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION if you are PAYING someone (especially a stranger) to perform a Past Life Regression reading or hypnosis for you. We cannot emphasize this enough! SMUDGING – A method of purification commonly used by Native people throughout the world via the wafting of smoke of slow-burning dried herbs or plant-based incense. Usually done in preparation of oneself and one’s sacred space for spiritual practice, it is also frequently done when moving into a new residence or when feelings of negativity have seemed to pervade a current residence, object, or person. In Western North America the three plants most frequently used in smudging are Sage, Cedar, and Sweetgrass. A basic smudging ceremony is to burn the clippings of some dried herbs (or a smudge stick or plant-based incense) and using your hands (or a feather) rub your hands in the smoke. Then gather the smoke and bring it onto your body (or the object or around the area) - especially onto any parts that you feel need spiritual healing. SOUL RETRIEVAL – trauma, shock, or abuse can cause a part of the soul energy to leave and remain “stuck.” A soul retrieval practitioner or shaman retrieves the soul, bringing it back to the physical body or, temporarily, to a crystal. PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION if you are considering PAYING someone (especially a stranger) to perform a Soul Retrieval for you. We cannot emphasize this enough! Though there are many legitimate, truly gifted Shaman in the world, there are millions more that are simply out to make a quick buck off of your pain, discomfort, insecurity, or curiosity! PLEASE use caution before turning over your hard-earned money to someone for any type of esoteric endeavor.

SPHERE – in metaphysical terms, a perfectly round piece of quartz crystal, semi-precious gemstone, or synthetic material. Synthetic stone-like and crystal-like objects are not from the Earth and hence do not contain any of the energies associated with their natural stone counterparts. Despite their labeled name, low cost, and labratory perfected beauty, coloring, or sheen, synthetic 'stones' or 'crystals' are not effective in Healing or Energy work.

TAROT – a form of divination using a deck of Tarot cards to 'paint a picture' or 'tell a story' that, when read or viewed as a whole, will reveal answers to a specific question about the past, present, or future. Contrary to popular belief, Tarot does not tell the future; rather, it can provide information on possible outcomes if current patterns remain unchanged. The Tarot is interpreted through a Tarot reading and can be done for yourself or others. Tarot Reading is an art that can be learned, and as with any art, comes more quickly and naturally to some than others. When done properly, a Tarot Reading is quite frequently an excellent method for divining answers to questions about the past, present, or future. Tarot reading is a common practice among psychics, fortune-tellers, etc. and Zen Crystals advises you to PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION if you are PAYING someone (especially a stranger) to perform a Divination method for you. We cannot emphasize this enough! Though there really are many legitimate, truly gifted psychics in the world, there are millions more that are simply out to make a quick buck off of your pain, discomfort, insecurity, or curiosity! PLEASE use caution before turning over your hard-earned money to someone for any divination method. A wonderful website for beginners wanting to learn about individual Tarot card meanings, or to learn to read Tarot cards is Learning the Tarot. SEE ALSO Tarot Spreads and Tarot Readings

TAROT CARDS/DECKS - the divination tool used for Tarot A standard Tarot Deck consists of a set of usually 78 cards (including 22 pictorial cards, known as the Major Arcana, and 56 other cards, usually numeric, known as the Minor Arcana) - that usually follow a particular theme (such as The Crystal and Gemstone Tarot; The Unicorn Tarot; The Fairie Tarot, etc.) Each individual card has a separate meaning. Many tarot decks follow a somewhat standard 'theme of interpretation' for card meanings, though many divert from these standard meanings. Each deck's author/creator will usually supply a mini 'cheat shee' if you will, describing the basic meanings of each of the cards in their deck. The most common Tarot deck in the world at the present time is the Rider-Waite deck, and the majority of decks in existence today have derived their meanings based on the meanings in the Rider-Waite deck. Beginners to the Tarot are urged

TAROT READING - the art of interpreting the Tarot Cards and 'reading' the story revealed by a Tarot Spread. In order to do a Tarot Reading successfully, you need more than just knowledge of standardized meanings of the cards or knowledge of how to lay out Tarot Spreads. You must also have access to your intuitive self --, for the cards speak not only to the rational mind, but to the inner-truth of one's being. When a person reads tarot cards, they are not a 'reader' in the sense of reading a book -- anyone with the ability to read can give a mechanical reading, using the books written words to tell the story. True Tarot Readers are those that have the ability to delve deeply into the Higher Self, where intuition dwells, You must have clarity of mind, spirit, and purpose to effectlively and accurately interpret the tarot. Tarot Reading is like learning a foreign language, the more you practice it, the more fluent you become. Here again, PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION if you are PAYING someone (especially a stranger) to perform a Divination method for you.

TAROT SPREADS - a specific pattern for laying out Tarot cards in order to do a Tarot Reading. Each position in the pattern represents a certain aspect in a person's life such as The Current Situation, Past Influences, Person's Affecting the Current Situation, Possible Outcome if current events continue unchanged, etc. A card's position in a Tarot Spread can have a significant effect on the meaning of that card. There are probably as many different spreads as there are people that read the Tarot. Some of the most common spreads today are: The Celtic Cross, The 3-card spread

THIRD CHAKRA – See SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA

THROAT CHAKRA – located in the throat area; also known as 5th Chakra. The Throat Chakra is about embracing our uniqueness and individuality and controls our ability to express ourselves fully and creatively.. The core need of the fifth chakra is to find our inner voice and learn to speak our truth. Be willing to question everything you previously believed. You may end up assimilating most of what you knew to be true, but it must first come through a deep process of questioning to establish its validity. An activated fifth chakra transmits the intent of a soul (astral and mental bodies). MIND AND SOUL ASSOCIATIONS: Dealing with communication and written and oral skills, expression, fulfillment, loyalty, reliability, responsibility, peace, joy. PHYSICAL ASSOCIATIONS AND BODY SYMPTOMS: Problems of the thyroid, throat and jaw areas, tonsillitis, lungs, vocal cords, breath, hearing difficulties, tinnitus. TUMBLED – The term used to refer to stones that have been polished in a large drum with grit, resulting in a smooth and often shiny stone. The energy of tumbled stones is not compromised during the tumbling process and tumbled stones are just as powerful as rough stones. Tumbled stones are often preferred to rough stones because of their smooth feel and lack of potentially sharp edges.

TRANSMUTATION - To change or alter in form, appearance, or nature and especially to a higher form. In Esoteric thought, to ascend beyond the levels of physical thought/form to higher consciousness. See also Astral-Travel, Past-Life Regression, Light Body.

VISUALIZATION – as it relates to Meditation or Energy Raising, the act of ‘seeing’ (picturing) in your mind’s eye - with all five senses - the manifestation of your goal or intention. For example: if you want someone to call you, Ground and Center, relax, breathe, and then visualize (picture) the phone conversation taking place. Hear the phone ringing, See yourself going to the phone and answering it, Feel the warmth or coolness of the phone in your hand, Smell the aroma of the fresh tea you just brewed to drink during your phone chat, Taste the delicious tea as you enjoy your phone chat.

WESTERN MEDICINE – The term used to describe the primary philosophy (and most commonly practiced form) of medicine in North America. An excellent article on the comparison between Eastern and Western medicine is at the Gancao website.

YIN-YANG - in the most basic of terms, Yin and Yang describe the polar effects of phenomena. The concept of yin and yang (or earth and heaven) describes two opposing and, at the same time, complimentary or completing aspects of any one phenomenon, object, or process. In viewing any one phenomenon (or the comparison of two phenomena), yin and yang describe the opposing qualities inherent in it. For example, winter and summer would be the yin and yang, respectively, of the year; male and female would be the yin and yang respectively of human beings. Yin qualities are characterized as dark, passive, soft, slowness, downward, substantial, water, cold, conserving, tranquil, gentle, weak, etc. Yin corresponds to the night. Yang qualities are characterized as hot, fire, bright, active, restless, hard, dry, expanding, strong, excitement, non-substantial, rapidity, etc. Yang corresponds to the day.
